CPR training vs first aid training: what’s the difference?

CPR vs first aid training, what’s the difference and what do I need? We get asked this a lot, usually by someone who’s trying to work out what their workplace actually needs. It’s a fair question, because the two things do overlap. But they’re not the same, and picking the wrong one can leave gaps you don’t want in an emergency.

What CPR Training Covers

CPR training is focused. It’s built around one scenario: someone has collapsed and stopped breathing. The skills you’ll practise are:

  • Recognising cardiac arrest
  • Calling for help
  • Chest compressions
  • Rescue breaths where appropriate
  • Using an AED (defibrillator)

That’s it, but done well, those skills save lives. Most people who complete CPR training feel far more prepared to act if the worst happens.

What First Aid Training Covers

First aid training takes a wider view. The HSE describes it as covering emergency response plus the range of injuries and illnesses that can realistically happen at work. So alongside CPR and AED use, a first aid course will typically cover things like:

  • Assessing a casualty
  • Serious bleeding and major haemorrhage
  • Choking
  • Burns
  • Seizures
  • Shock
  • Recovery position
  • Knowing when and how to call 999

It’s about being able to handle more than one type of emergency, not just cardiac arrest.

So Which Do You Actually Need?

Honestly, when weighing up CPR training vs first aid training, it depends on your workplace and what you’re trying to achieve.

If your main concern is cardiac arrest response, and you want staff to feel confident around a defibrillator, CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) training is a solid starting point.

If you need staff to manage a wider range of emergencies safely until an ambulance arrives, a full first aid course is the better fit. For most workplaces, that’s the more practical choice.

A simple way to think about it:

  • CPR or BLS training if your focus is resuscitation and AED confidence
  • First aid training if your team needs broader emergency skills for day-to-day workplace incidents

The Bottom Line

CPR is one skill set within a bigger picture. First aid training gives you the whole picture.

The goal of any good training isn’t just to tick a box. It’s to make sure people can actually act when something goes wrong. That takes practice, good teaching, and training that reflects the real situations your team might face.

We offer a range of first aid courses, from paediatric first aid for schools or families, to emergency first aid at work courses for workplaces.
